Village & Population Overview:
Sharpara village was founded in 1315AD When Hazrat Shah Kamal, one of the 360 companions of Hazrat Shahjalal, migrated from Syria and set his roots in greater Sylhet. His modern day descendants go by the surname Kamali (descendants of Shah Kamal)
The modern day village has a mixture of residence mainly Muslim with some Hindu followers and a mixture of poor and well off households. A significant portion of the income stream comes from experts in the UK alongside income from many local businessmen and some farmers.
In our (BRPHI) most recent survey in 2020, there were approximately 700 current residents across 10 “para” or sections making up the village of greater Shaharpara.
Clinic & Director Information:
This clinic was started by Dr Abdul Wadud Kamali and family; dedicated to his parents, leaving a family legacy in their ancestral village. This is set in their own village, aiming to provide free health care for the poor and quality health care for extended family, friends and neighbours in the village.
It was also set up with the aim of determining the health status of the villagers, identifying chronic disease, preventing these diseases from developing and therefore keeping the villagers healthy and preventing complications from such diseases.
Rahim's Story
Hello,
My name is Rahim. I am 2 years old and I live in Shaharpara, Sunamganj. I started to have problems passing urine one day. Then my face and tummy started to swell up. This went on for weeks. My mum and dad couldn’t afford to take me to the doctor.
One day I didn’t pass any urine at all. I was crying from pain. My legs, arms and face were swelling up even more. I hadn’t passed urine for 2 long days.
Then my mother took me to a free medial camp in the village bazar. The doctor saw me for free and gave me some tablets. This helped me pass urine and made my pain go away. He said that it was serious and I needed to see a specialist. He also said that had this been picked up earlier with a simple urine dip test, it could have been treated.
We couldn’t go to see a specialist. I died 1 week later.
This is what my mother said to the doctor after I died:
“I am really grateful you treated my child for free. This gave me 2 precious extra weeks with him. I don’t wish this on anyone and hope you can help treat patients like my boy early and prevent this happening in the first place”.
